In fact, due to the nature of WC3 as a comparison to SC2, if we're speaking exclusively about micro and not counting macro (counting both SC2 is certainly more intensive), WC3 would be arguably more micro intensive.

When viewed in this way I think it actually shows DoW as a game with more competitive potential but if you really followed WC3 to that degree you'd know full well how crazy WC3 micro could get. This isn't a criticism of DoW or any other game but WC3 relied far more on extremely quick micro and maco than most other RTS games to the point that you could easily make up for poor strategic choices if you had superior micro. At the top level, WC3 tends to have the highest APM of any game outside of the SC series, being far higher than games like AoE or DoW. While APM is an imperfect measurement, if you want to be objective as you say, it's the only real way to measure the amount of micro a game takes.

Large armies smashing does happen, but mostly when both players are noobs, or in casual games. And the game is usually decided before you even have a chance to build a large army. High level DoW 1 is about as micro intensive as professional Warcraft 3. In a game between two good players action starts right from the first minutes and there is a lot of micro involved. There is a good reason it was a part of World Cyber Games in 20. Multiplayer DoW 1 can be very competitive, more so that DoW 2 if we look at the highest level of play. You either didn't play DoW 1 against any decent players, or you are intentionally misinterpreting it. I wouldn't mind another DoW 2 since it was far more competitive than 1 ever was but 1 was great for brain dead giggling as large armies smashed which seems to be what a ton of people also want.
